Photographs and Autobiographical Profiles of 140 American Men
Who Just Happen To Be Gay
Reveal Unstereotypical Lives Far From the Gay Pride Parade Route
Joan Rivers, Colin Farrell, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner are among the many stars who’ve been photographed by New York City celebrity photographer Scott Pasfield, but for his moving new coffee table book Gay In America, Pasfield stepped out of the limelight and into the homes and the lives of 140 gay American men in all 50 states. A great gift for gay men and those who love them, give the book Michael Musto of the Village Voice calls, “Sprawling, moving, and lively...an inspiring cross section" and about which Lynn Evarts of the America Library Association raves, “This is one of the most important gay books a library can offer teens.” Available at Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, IndieBound. www.gayinamerica.us
Joan Rivers, Colin Farrell, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner are among the many stars who’ve been photographed by New York City celebrity photographer Scott Pasfield, but for his moving new coffee table book Gay In America, Pasfield stepped out of the limelight and into the homes and the lives of 140 gay American men in all 50 states.
It took Pasfield 3 years, traveling 54,000 miles to photograph the men of Gay In America. While many of his subjects live in large cites, just as many live far from any Gay Pride Parade route, community center, or even gay bar. A beautiful coffee table photo book indeed, but what makes it special are the deeply personal, yet universally human stories told by the men on its pages.
From seniors Nile & Jim (page 26), together 13 years, both formerly married to women, now happy, humble and living quietly, but actively in their community to Jakoury (page 206), the gay Chester, VA teen who took up boxing, grew back his mohawk, knocked out the school bully and started his high school's Gay Straight Alliance, to Robert, Richard & Dale (page 70)–three seniors in a happy "triad" relationship in Savannah, GA to John (page 138), the Omaha Dad, who concluded "Love wins!" after being interrupted–mid-coming out speech–by his ten year old son with "Just a second, you're still my dad right...then what's the big deal?"–these are just a few of the men you’ll meet on the pages of Gay In America.
“Sprawling, moving, and lively, Scott Pasfield's Gay In America shows what being a gay male looks, sounds, and feels like in today's USA. An inspiring cross section.”
– Michael Musto, Village Voice
“Gay In America sends a powerful message to gay kids. You can live where you want, do what you want, be yourself! You don’t have to hide or fit into someone’s idea how to be gay or how to live."
– Rob, Leonard, ND (Gay In America, page 164)
"Gay In America captures our diversity, our joys, and our loves—and the undeniable contribution we make to American culture."
– Dan Savage, It Gets Better Project
“This is one of the most important gay books a library can offer teens.”
– Lynn Evarts, Chair, The Rainbow Project, American Library Association
“I am now proudly displaying this book on my coffee table in my living room and encourage everyone to take a look and read the stories.”
– Christiane, Old Bridge, NJ
Just looking in this man's eyes made me cry. I didn't even have to read about him because his face conveyed absolutely everything he was feeling...his great loss and his great love for his partner. Those against gay marriage should all look at this photo to see what true love and devotion is. [In response to Rick, Gay In America, page 68] – Lynn, Madison, WI
